RESUMO

Terminos Lagoon (TL), in the southern Gulf of Mexico, has been under intensive anthropogenic pressure (e.g., oil-industry development) since the 1970s. Historical changes in flux ratios of potentially toxic elements (PTEs; As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, Zn) were, for the first time, assessed inside TL by using 210Pb-dated sediment cores. Sediments showed minor enrichments for Cd, Ni, Pb, and V. However, according to international benchmarks, the As, Cr, Cu, and Ni concentrations could pose a risk for benthic biota. Sedimentary processes involved in the accumulation of PTEs were identified through a chemometric approach. Increments in PTEs flux ratios concur with the recent (⁓50 years) and extensive land-use changes, particularly the transport and deposit of materials delivered by rivers. These findings are expected to be used in managing this crucial natural resource, the larger Mexican coastal lagoon ecosystem, to mitigate the effects of global change.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) are recognized as a global emergent pollution impact, which can affect all food chains. Estimating MPs transport pathways in coastal ecosystems is needed to assess their likely effects. Here, we studied MPs accumulation and transport pathways in the Estero de Urias lagoon system (low-inflow estuary) using field data and a 3D particle model. Field results showed that the MPs present similar abundances throughout the study area during the dry and rainy seasons. Model simulations indicated that i) morphology and tidal currents caused the MPs discharged in the lagoon to remain inside, and ii) wind-induced currents caused the MPs in the coastal area to be transported to the southwest. These transport processes may be responsible for homogenizing MPs concentrations through the studied area. In addition, model simulations suggested that EUL-dense waters can export MPs from the coastal area to the sea bottom.

RESUMO

Three 210Pb-dated sediment cores were used to evaluate the contamination degree and flux ratios of potentially toxic elements (PTEs; As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) in seagrass meadows from the northern margin of Términos Lagoon (TL), southern Gulf of Mexico. The sediments displayed minor Cd, Ni, V, and Zn enrichments but moderate to strong enrichment by As. Results from a chemometric analysis revealed that: 1) salinization and grain size, along with 2) the terrigenous inputs are the major factors influencing the PTEs accumulation. The historical trends of PTEs flux ratios nearly follow the large-scale land-use changes around TL, linked to the growth of the Mexican oil industry in the area since the 1970s. Our findings showed the critical role of seagrass meadows as PTEs sinks. This information is useful for decision-makers to develop restoration projects for a vulnerable site within the largest coastal lagoon ecosystem in Mexico.

RESUMO

To comprehend mangrove crab responses to predicted global climate changes, we assessed submersion and desiccation survival durations and salinity tolerances and upper thermal limits in fiddler crabs from Isla del Carmen, Yucatán Peninsula. Based on their tolerances of extreme ambient conditions, we also calculated safety margins using abiotic monitoring data. The two most terrestrial species, Minuca rapax and Leptuca panacea, exhibited submersion tolerances of from 22 to 40 h, and desiccation tolerances of from 30 to 55 h; LC50's were ≈45‰S and UT50's were ≈40 °C. The two least terrestrial species, M. vocator and L. speciosa, were less tolerant of all experimental challenges, showing submersion and desiccation tolerances of <6 h, and LC50's of 36‰S and UT50's of 38 °C. While these fiddler crabs inhabit niches closer to their salinity and desiccation/submersion tolerances than to their temperature limits, all are clearly vulnerable to the multiple stressors that accompany anticipated global climate change.

RESUMO

Globally, nutrient river discharges drive water quality of coastal ecosystems, and excess nutrients can cause eutrophication impacts. The Grijalva-Usumacinta River System (GURS) discharges in the southern Gulf of Mexico (SGoM) and it is the second largest riverine input to the Gulf. To study how contrasting GURS freshwater flow between rainy and dry seasons affects nutrients concentrations in the receiving coastal ecosystem, we evaluated nutrient variability in the water column during both seasons. High inorganic nutrients and total phosphate outline the rivers discharge plumes during rainy season, and were significantly higher than during the dry season throughout the study area, suggesting contrasting seasonal nutrient discharge of the GURS to coastal waters. On average the GURS discharged 141,123 t N yr-1 6893 t P yr-1 and 928,904 t Si yr-1 to SGoM. These results contribute with a nutrient baseline in the SGoM that could be useful for GURS decision-makers.

RESUMO

Globally, oxygen concentration in many coastal areas is depleting. River nutrient discharges may produce hypoxia events. The Southern Gulf of Mexico receives the discharges of the Grijalva-Usumacinta River System, the second largest in the Gulf of Mexico. To evaluate the influence of river discharges on dissolved oxygen concentrations in the receiving coastal ecosystem, we studied the variation of physicochemical variables in the water column. During the dry season, the influence of the river waters to the coastal area is scarce, but during the rainy season the river plume reached ~9 km offshore. The lowest concentration of dissolved oxygen (3.6 mg L-1) was observed within the river plume. We concluded that, in the studied area, hypoxia events (oxygen concentrations ≤ 2 mg L-1) would occur during the rainy season, low winds and in deeper waters (>80 m depth).

RESUMO

Water temperature of deep lakes is often used to evaluate climate variability over long periods. Santa Maria del Oro Lake is a sub-tropical crater-lake (60 m maximum depth) almost confined by surrounding mountains, which only receives seasonal fresh water input. In order to evaluate lake thermal variations, we measured water temperatures at bottom, 4 m, 10 m, 25 m, and 32 m depth. To study lake vertical mixing process, we implemented a 3D high-resolution model forced with atmospheric variables. Field data analysis indicate an hypolimnetic warming rate of 0.1136 ±â€¯0.0001 °C y-1, about ten times larger than the mean global warming rate, and model results indicated that this was mainly caused by thermal diffusion between surface and bottom water layers. The lake presents a stable temperature stratification, which can reach 40 m depth during the windiest and coolest nights, indicating that the lake is oligomictic (i.e. mixes only occasionally). Inter-annual climate variability and global warming can alter the frequency of full vertical water mixing and, therefore, deep water warming. The used methodology can be useful to evaluate bottom trend temperature of subtropical lakes worldwide, and results may contribute to the use of deep lake waters as sentinels of multi-annual climate variability. As deep water mixing affects water quality, this may also be useful to better manage lake environmental services.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mangrove forests provide many ecosystem services, including the provision of habitat that supports avian biodiversity. However, hurricanes can knock down trees, alter hydrologic connectivity, and affect avian habitat. In 1995, Hurricanes Opal and Roxanne destroyed approximately 1,700 ha of mangrove forest in Laguna de Términos, Mexico. Since then, hydrological restoration has been implemented to protect the mangrove forest and its biodiversity. METHODS: Since avian communities are often considered biological indicators of ecosystem quality, avian diversity and species relative abundance were evaluated as indicators of mangrove restoration success by comparing undisturbed mangrove patches with those affected by the hurricanes. Using bird surveys, similarity analyses, and generalized linear models, we evaluated the effects of water quality variables and forest structure on the relative abundance and diversity of the avian community in disturbed, restored, and undisturbed mangrove patches. RESULTS: Higher bird species richness and relative abundances were found in disturbed and restored sites compared to the undisturbed site. After restoration, values of frequency of flooding, water temperature, tree density, and the number of tree species were more similar to that of the undisturbed site than to the values of the disturbed one. Such variables influenced the relative abundance of bird guilds in the different habitat conditions. Furthermore, some insectivorous bird species, such as the Yellow Warbler and Tropical Kingbird, were found to be similarly abundant in both undisturbed and restored sites, but absent or very low in occurrence at the disturbed site. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our results strongly suggest that hydrologic restoration helps to enhance niche availability for different bird guilds, including water and canopy bird species. Our work can help inform management strategies that benefit avian communities in mangrove forests and wetland systems.

RESUMO

Shrimp farm aquaculture causes environmental impacts, notably decreased water quality due to the release of nutrient-rich effluents. Pond wastewater is usually discharged without treatment, and tidal conditions are not taken into account in the management plans. However, natural variability of nutrients makes difficult field evaluation and attribution of impacts. Here we implemented a three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model (spatial resolution=50m×50m, time resolution=4s) in order to evaluate the dispersion conditions under specific tidal conditions of nutrient discharges from a semi-intensive shrimp farm during spring and neap tide. Ammonia was quickly assimilated by plankton and its concentration recovered initial levels 10days after the beginning of the harvest. Due to the higher salinity of the pond effluents, shrimp farm discharges accumulate in waters and sediments of the upper lagoon creeks, mostly affecting the benthos, thus implying a potential risk of shrimp farm self-contamination. Maximum concentrations of most biogeochemical tracers occurred when the harvest ends and the ponds are fully emptied. We show that maximum nutrient concentrations can be reduced by ~10% when the harvest ends during spring tides compared to harvests ending during neap tides. This work may be useful to improve the management of shrimp farm effluents by reducing, easily and at little cost, nutrient impacts on tropical and sub-tropical receiving ecosystems.

RESUMO

The oldest refinery and the major petrochemical complexes of Mexico are located in the lower reach of the Coatzacoalcos River, considered the most polluted coastal area of Mexico. A (210)Pb-dated sediment core, from the continental shelf of the Coatzacoalcos River, was studied to assess the contamination impact by the oil industry in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The sedimentary record showed the prevalence of petrogenic PAHs between 1950s and 1970s, a period during which waste discharges from the oil industry were not regulated. Later on, sediments exhibited higher contents of pyrogenic PAHs, attributed to the incineration of petrochemical industry wastes and recurrent wildfires in open dumpsites at the nearby swamps. The total concentration of the 16 EPA-priority PAHs indicated low levels of contamination (<100 ng g(-1)), except a peak value (>1000 ng g(-1)) during the late 1970s, most likely due to the major oil spill produced by the blowout of the Ixtoc-I offshore oil rig in deep waters of the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Most of the PAH congeners did not show defined temporal trends but, according to a Factor Analysis, apparently have a common origin, probably waste released from the nearby oil industry. The only exceptions were the pyrogenic benzo(b)fluoranthene and benzo(a)pyrene, and the biogenic perylene, that showed increasing concentration trends with time, which we attributed to erosional input of contaminated soil from the catchment area. Our study confirmed chronic oil contamination in the Coatzacoalcos River coastal area from land based sources for more than 60 years (since 1950s).
